Show Notes for Fetish Flame 10.0 - Interview with Carol Queen

ff_carol-face.jpg

Nova and Atticus are joined on the red couch by Carol Queen, PhD, Staff Sexologist at Good Vibrations and co-founder of the Center for Sex and Culture. Carol is an author, performer, producer, editor and educator.

Listen in on a lively and informative conversation. Highlights include a discussion of the fun job of testing the toys at Good Vibes and going through private collections of porn donated to the Center. She shares a story of homemade porn that involves something as simple a one-minute segment of a woman tossing her hair or pursing her lips, cycled forward and backward repeatedly for the viewer's pleasure. What Carol and her partner Robert are most interested in finding are the things that cause arousal in individuals - and not just the mainstream "created porn" for the masses.

While talking fetishes, Nova is elated to find that Carol shares her fetish for the male forearm!

Carol generously shares her knowledge and experiences. She truly believes in the importance of sharing information as much as possible in order to educate people on all things sexual.

Along the same lines as her advice column "Queen of Hearts," she has plans to appear regularly on Fetish Flame in an "Ask Carol" segment. We invite you all to write in with your questions for us to present to Carol (we are happy to discuss them anonymously if you do not wish your name or pseudonym to be used).

First comment here, found the podcast on itunes. :) Have to say I really enjoy your show. Really great stuff, fun to listen to. This was the first show I listened to and it was very interested. It really made me think about studying sexuality and stuff like that in college. I am in college right now and have an undecided major. This show really got me thinking about the whole scene. :) Good fun and all. Right now I am enjoying the other podcasts I just downloaded, keep up the good work.

Carol Queen blows my mind, specifically the part about preserving porn for posterity (got my own similar project underway, heh heh). Looking forward to hearing more from her. Have never been in Good Vibrations but now i have to go. Another great show!

Hi Syndi,

I appeciated the porn preservation project as well. Contemporary culture is so ephemeral, the web even more so, and as you move further out to the margins of socially "normal" , the word ephemeral doesn't even begin to cover the situation. But porn is not limited to kinksters--it is widespread in the range of people that covertly partake in it and whose sexuality is explicitly and implicitly shaped by porn. It actually takes a lot of courage in this puritanical age for someone like Dr. Queen to see that porn is an influential component in society. Whether or not one likes or approves of it, porn is worthy of perservation for future study. The are museums of daytime, primetime, and sports television for crying out loud and few people have had their sexuality meaningfully shaped by the Young and the Restless, or Happy Days, or Monday Night Football.

On another topic... Where are Atticus and Nova and where is my Fetish Flame fix? I am going through FF withdrawl!

Hey man, another great show in the can! (bad pun) Geek Quiz: Nova's voice on the disclaimer at the top of this podcast was electronically lowered in pitch and made her sound: A)Scary B)Manly C)Sexy D)Other Worldly

Robert, Welcome aboard! Hope you are enjoying the rest of the shows as well. Keep us posted on what you choose for a major.

syndi, I can't wait to hear more about your project. =hug=

Billy, Billy, Billy...you never cease to keep 'outing' us =giggle=
Yes, Atticus played with the intro. My answer to your multiple choice question is a split between B & D :)

IntenselyGreen, We just put our New Year show in the can and will be posting it soon!

Nova and Atticus, this is one of the best shows to date. I have been listening since the beginning, and have found each and every show better than that previous. But, this one was absolutely amazing. I was actually amazed when the end music started playing and it was over already. I could have listened to it for hours. Thanks to Nova for her kind emails over the past year, and while I'm still very nervous and new to it all, you all have made it so much more comfortable and easy for the real me and my sexual desire to be brought forward. Sadly I'm in a less than open area of the country and there are very few parties or events that has allowed me to explore. I have to say that that the term "nervous" isn't strong enough. Which is quite funny since I'm very outgoing and vivacious man in the rest of my life. I have taken what was said here to heart and am infused with a new love to explore more. I guess it is true, with knowledge comes power, though, the power here might be just to finally get myself to go to a sex party or club. I thank you to the both of you perched upon your red couch. You are doing a service to the world by making everyone see how worth while life and love and the persuit of enjoyment really can be.

you have a friend here in the dull cold part of New York. Should I find myself in your neck of the woods please allow me to raise a glass to you over a drink. For it is your determination that helps me grow into the man I am truly meant to be.

Carol Queen, Keep up doing what you are doing, and know that you are making a difference in not just the lives of those around you but the mindset of the people around the globe. Something that is needed in these uptight times. I thank you for doing something I have been, and still might be far to shy and or embarressed to undertake. You my dear are as beautiful as you are smart, and your thoughts run as deep as a thousand oceans, which only scratches the surface of the depth of your soul and heart. To you a offer a kiss of thanks.

Your friend,
Magnus
